Family Law
Will California’s 2026 child support changes automatically update my existing order?
No. An existing child support order does not update automatically; a parent can ask the court to change it, and cases involving a local child support agency follow different instructions. The 2026 provisions described in the Judicial Council’s review concern how local agencies use income or earning-capacity information when a parent’s actual income is unknown; they do not set a new amount for every family. Can a California custody or parenting-time order be changed?
A parent can ask the court to change an existing order by filing a Request for Order in the family case. The court decides based on the child’s best interests; parents who agree can ask the judge to make their agreement an order.
Intellectual Property
What happens after I apply to register a trademark?
The USPTO assigns an examining attorney to review the application. You may need to respond to an office action. If the mark meets the requirements, it is published for opposition before registration can proceed.
What does the copyright symbol do?
A copyright notice identifies a claim of copyright ownership. For works first published on or after March 1, 1989, notice is generally optional, though it can still provide legal benefits. Read our guide to the copyright symbol and the U.S. Copyright Office’s Circular 3 on copyright notice.

What should an LLC operating agreement cover?
An operating agreement sets out how LLC members will manage the company and conduct its affairs. California LLCs keep the agreement in their records rather than filing it with the Secretary of State.
How do I choose a California business structure?
Compare ownership, management, liability, tax treatment, and filing duties before forming an entity. The right choice depends on the business and its owners.
Civil Litigation
What should I do if I am served with a California civil lawsuit?
Read the summons and complaint promptly and note the response deadline. In many ordinary civil cases, a response is due within 30 days after service, but the right deadline and response depend on the case and how service occurred.
Can a civil lawsuit settle before trial?
Yes. Parties may negotiate or use mediation while a case is pending. Keep tracking court deadlines during settlement talks; the case is not resolved until the settlement is finalized and the court case is addressed.
Estate Planning
What is the difference between a will and a living trust?
A will records instructions for property after death. A living trust can manage assets transferred into it and may help avoid probate for property properly held in the trust.
How do powers of attorney and advance health care directives fit into an estate plan?
These documents can name people to make financial or health care decisions if you cannot act for yourself. Their scope and execution should fit your circumstances.
